A 22-day ban on catching all types of fish, including hilsa, will come into effect from midnight tonight to ensure safe breeding during the peak hilsa spawning season.
The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock has imposed a restriction from October 4 to October 25, prohibiting fishing activities in both inland and marine waters nationwide. Most fishing trawlers have already returned to the coast ahead of the ban.
District Fisheries Officer, Md. Nazmul Huda said that to ensure the safe breeding of mother hilsa during the ban period, special drives will be conducted jointly by the Naval Police, Coast Guard, District Administration, and the Fisheries Department.
The district will also operate mobile courts to prosecute violators.
He added that during the ban period, 26,280 fishing families in the district will receive 25 kilograms of rice each, totaling 657 metric tons of VGF rice assistance. Tonight at midnight
