Law enforcement in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar, has rescued 18 Rohingya, including women, men, and children, who were attempting to migrate to Malaysia illegally. During the operation, police also arrested a human trafficker. The rescued individuals were residents of various Rohingya camps in Ukhiya and Teknaf.
Nurul Alam (16), one of the rescued Rohingya, shared his ordeal, stating, “I was lured from Kutupalong Camp with the promise of a job, but then I was sold to traffickers for Tk 50,000. They tied my hands and feet and kept me in a remote hilly area for nine days. Today, just as they were about to put us on a boat to Malaysia, police arrived and rescued us.”
The rescue operation occurred at around 7:30 PM on Wednesday (March 12) in the Kachhapia Marine Drive ghat area of Baharchhara Union, Teknaf.
The arrested trafficker was Nezam Uddin, also known as Mehebub, from Hajampura village in Baharchhara Union.
According to police sources, the rescued group includes 11 women, five children, and two men.
Confirming the incident, Inspector Himel Roy (Investigation) of Teknaf Model Police Station said, “Acting on intelligence reports about a group of traffickers smuggling 19 Rohingya, including women and children, through the Kachhapia Marine Drive area, a police team conducted an operation. We successfully rescued the victims and apprehended one trafficker. The rescued individuals will be handed over to their families following legal procedures.”
