Police have filed a case against 23 people, including Tuptup Resto and Resort owner Tanvir Sultan Mia and manager Mohammad Sumon, over a fire that killed 10 tourists at the resort in Patwartek, Inani, Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar. The resort manager has been arrested.
Sub-Inspector Ashish Kumar Sutradhar of Ukhiya Police Station filed the case on Saturday night. Officer-in-Charge Atikur Rahman Majumder confirmed the manager’s arrest.
The fire broke out at around 7:30am on Saturday at the resort beside Patwartek beach along the Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf Marine Drive, killing 10 people.
Meanwhile, Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner Md A Mannan said DNA testing would be conducted to confirm the identities of the deceased before the bodies were handed over to their families.
He said DNA tests would help avoid confusion over the recovered bodies, missing people, and identification of the victims. The bodies would remain at the morgue of Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital until the tests were completed and a decision was made on handing them over to relatives.
Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad, superintendent of police of the Criminal Investigation Department’s Cox’s Bazar unit, said steps were being taken to collect samples for DNA testing.
Arrangements would be made to collect samples at Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital. If necessary, he added, a specialised CID team would be brought from Dhaka to collect samples and arrange testing.
The district administration has formed a five-member committee, headed by Additional Deputy Commissioner Tasnim Jahan, to investigate the cause of the fire. The administration said the committee had already begun its investigation.
