A 58-day ban on fishing in the Bay of Bengal begins today to ensure the breeding, production, and conservation of marine fish. The restriction will remain in effect until June 11, during which no marine fish species may be harvested.

The government has allocated 78 kilograms of rice per person as relief assistance to support affected fishermen during the ban.

According to a circular from the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, the ban is imposed annually from April 15 to June 11 under the “Marine Fisheries Rules, 2023,” which prohibits all types of fishing in Bangladesh’s marine waters during this period.

A task force comprising members of the Coast Guard, Navy, and Department of Fisheries will patrol the coastal areas regularly to enforce the ban. The ministry warned that legal action will be taken against anyone found violating the directive.

This annual restriction aims to restore declining fish stocks and promote sustainable fishing practices in the Bay of Bengal.
