The High Representative of the interim government, Dr. Khalilur Rahman, has said that the safe repatriation of Rohingyas is currently not possible given the prevailing situation in Myanmar’s Rakhine state.
He made the remarks on Friday evening while speaking to journalists during the traditional Rakhine water festival ‘Maha Sangrain Pwe’ at Achimong Peshkar Para in Tekpara, Cox’s Bazar.
“In the present conditions in Rakhine, it is not possible to ensure the safe return of Rohingyas,” Dr. Khalilur said. “We are working with all stakeholders to restore peace and stability in Rakhine so that a conducive environment for repatriation can be created.”
“All doors remain open. We are engaging with everyone,” he added.
Dr. Khalilur stressed that coordinated global efforts are essential to make Rohingya repatriation easier. He welcomed Myanmar’s recent initiative to verify 180,000 Rohingyas for potential return, calling it a “noteworthy and timely step.”
Earlier in the day, Dr. Khalilur visited Rohingya camps in Ukhiya and joined the Rohingya community for Jummah prayers. “I informed them about an upcoming international UN conference where Rohingyas will be able to voice their aspirations and speak about their future,” he said.
Referring to the commitment made by the Chief Advisor, he added, “We are working to fulfill the promise that the next Eid will be celebrated by the Rohingyas in their homeland.”
Congratulating the Rakhine community, Dr. Khalilur noted, “Bangladesh is a land of diversity—rich in religions, ethnicities, and cultures. A festive spirit is prevailing throughout the country.”
He expressed hope that such celebrations would play a significant role in enriching the cultural landscape of Bangladesh.
Dr. Khalilur was accompanied by Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner Mizanur Rahman, Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner Md Salah Uddin, and Cox’s Bazar Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nilufa Yasmin during his visit to various Buddhist temples on the occasion of the water festival.
