National River Conservation Commission chairman Moksumul Hakim Chowdhury on Friday conducted an on-the-spot inspection of the Bakkhali River in Cox’s Bazar to assess the current situation regarding encroachment, pollution, and navigability.
During the visit, he inspected several sections of the river, including Kastura Ghat, Peshkar Para, and the Khurushkul New Bridge area in Cox’s Bazar Sadar upazila.
Speaking to reporters, the commission chairman said that pollution in the Bakkhali River had reached an alarming level. He also stressed the urgent need to remove garbage heaps along the riverbanks and called for a coordinated effort with civil society and all relevant stakeholders to restore the river.
The inspection team included National River Conservation Commission secretary Moniruzzaman Talukder, assistant chief Ahmad Shams Kadir, the assistant commissioner (land) of Cox’s Bazar Sadar upazila, BIWTA port officials, and other concerned authorities.
