Bangla Sign Language Day was observed in Cox’s Bazar on Thursday through a series of programmes organised by the district administration and the district social services department.

Marking the day, a rally, distribution of assistive devices for persons with disabilities, and a discussion meeting were held under the theme ‘Use of sign language, rights of persons with speech and hearing impairments’. The programmes began in the morning with the release of balloons to mark the rally’s inauguration at the district administration premises.

Later, a discussion meeting was held at the conference room of the deputy commissioner’s office, where additional district magistrate (overall) Imran Hossain Sajib attended as the chief guest.

Speaking at the event, Imran Hossain Sajib said that only a sensitive society can build a humane and inclusive nation. “To achieve that, we must be humane in every respect and show due respect to sign language used by persons with hearing impairments,” he said.

The discussion meeting was chaired by the deputy director of the district social services department, Hasan Masud. Deputy director of the youth development department, Md Moazzem Hossain, and Cox’s Bazar Press Club president Mahbubur Rahman, also spoke at the programme.

Following the discussion, five hearing aids and five wheelchairs were distributed among persons with disabilities.
