The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has secured victory in all four parliamentary constituencies in Cox’s Bazar district.
The full unofficial results of Cox’s Bazar-1 (Chakaria-Pekua), Cox’s Bazar-2 (Maheshkhali-Kutubdia), Cox’s Bazar-3 (Sadar-Ramu-Eidgaon) and Cox’s Bazar-4 (Ukhia-Teknaf) were officially announced early Friday (13 February) at the Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner’s office. Returning Officer Md A Mannan declared the results.
In Cox’s Bazar-1 (Chakaria-Pekua), which has a total of 540,490 voters, BNP candidate Salahuddin Ahmed secured 222,019 votes with the Sheaf of Paddy symbol from 178 centres, including postal ballots. His nearest rival, Abdullah Al Faruk of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, received 129,728 votes with the Scales symbol. Islami Andolan Bangladesh candidate Md Sarwar Ali Kutubi obtained 4,528 votes with the Hand Fan symbol. A total of 356,275 valid votes were cast, with 6,162 ballots rejected. The total votes cast stood at 362,437, representing 67.06 percent of the electorate.
In Cox’s Bazar-2 (Maheshkhali-Kutubdia), which has 387,851 voters, BNP candidate Alamgir Muhammad Mahfuz Ullah Farid won with 125,543 votes from 125 centres, including postal ballots. Jamaat-e-Islami candidate A.H.M. Hamidur Rahman Azad received 91,889 votes. Islami Andolan Bangladesh candidate Ziaul Haque got 8,799 votes, Jatiya Party candidate Md Mahmudul Haque secured 757 votes, and Gono Odhikar Parishad candidate S.M. Roknuzzaman Khan received 197 votes. A total of 227,185 valid votes were cast, with 5,524 rejected. The turnout was 232,709 votes, accounting for 60.00 percent.
In Cox’s Bazar-3 (Sadar-Ramu-Eidgaon), which has 545,964 voters, BNP candidate Lutfur Rahman received 182,096 votes from 183 centres, including postal ballots. Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Shahidul Alam Bahadur secured 161,827 votes. Islami Andolan Bangladesh candidate Amirul Islam got 5,149 votes, independent candidate Mohammad Ilias Mia received 947 votes, Bangladesh Labour Party candidate Jagadish Barua got 602 votes, and Amjanata Party candidate Nurul Absar secured 367 votes. The total number of valid votes was 350,988, with 5,606 rejected ballots. Overall turnout stood at 356,594 votes, or 65.31 percent.
In Cox’s Bazar-4 (Ukhia-Teknaf), which has 375,688 voters, BNP candidate Shahjahan Chowdhury won with 123,582 votes from 116 centres, including postal ballots. Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Nur Ahmed Anwari received 122,033 votes. Islami Andolan Bangladesh candidate Nurul Haque secured 4,338 votes, while National Democratic Movement (NDM) candidate Saifuddin Khaled obtained 379 votes. A total of 250,332 valid votes were cast, with 4,899 rejected. The turnout was recorded at 250,231 votes, representing 67.94 percent of registered voters.
With the announcement of results, BNP candidates have been declared unofficially elected in all four constituencies of Cox’s Bazar district.
