The 81st Venice Film Festival concluded after 11 eventful and humid days, with Pedro Almodóvar’s The Room Next Door taking home the prestigious Golden Lion for Best Film. The film, Almodóvar’s 23rd and his first in English, was a favorite among the 21 films in competition, following last year’s win by Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things.
Adapted from Sigrid Nunez’s novel What Are You Going Through, the film stars Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton as two friends who reconnect after one is diagnosed with terminal cervical cancer. The jury, led by Isabelle Huppert, praised the film for its poignant storytelling and powerful performances.
