Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner Md A Mannan on Friday visited several flood-affected areas in Cox’s Bazar Sadar and Ramu upazilas, where prolonged heavy rainfall over the past six to seven days has caused widespread waterlogging.
The deputy commissioner inspected Madhyam Muhuripara in Cox’s Bazar Sadar and Gani Sawdagar Para in South Mithachhari Union of Ramu, among other affected areas. He also met with flood-hit residents who had taken shelter in emergency shelters.
During the visit, he inspected three emergency shelters and spoke with displaced families to learn about their immediate needs and the challenges they were facing.
The deputy commissioner said all sluice gates across the district had been opened to ensure the smooth flow of floodwater.
He added that 640 shelters had been kept ready across different upazilas to deal with any further deterioration in the situation. Adequate relief supplies have been stockpiled, while upazila administrations are working to deliver assistance promptly to affected families, he said.
He also said district and upazila-level control rooms were operating round the clock to ensure a swift response to the needs of disaster-hit communities.
Following the inspection, the deputy commissioner distributed relief materials among marooned and underprivileged families.
Officials present during the visit included the upazila nirbahi officers (UNOs) of Cox’s Bazar Sadar and Ramu, as well as the district relief and rehabilitation officer.
