Cox’s Bazar recorded 78mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours as the No. 3 local cautionary signal at the maritime port was withdrawn on Thursday.
The rainfall was recorded amid persistent rain and adverse weather conditions, said assistant meteorologist at the Cox’s Bazar Meteorological Office Mohammad Abdul Hannan.
He said the No. 3 local warning signal had been withdrawn, although the possibility of further rain remained.
Residents of coastal areas and vessels operating at sea have been advised to remain cautious in view of the prevailing weather conditions, he said.
Meanwhile, a fishing trawler sank off the Nazirartek coast in Cox’s Bazar early Thursday amid rough weather.
Two fishermen were reportedly killed, and two others went missing after the trawler sank during the stormy weather. Rescue efforts were underway.
The incident has once again highlighted the risks fishermen face along the Cox’s Bazar coast during adverse weather.
Fishermen often face accidents while going to sea amid rough conditions, strong winds and rain. Authorities have therefore advised fishing boats and other vessels to exercise caution and avoid going to sea until weather conditions improve.
The adverse weather has also affected the tourism sector in Cox’s Bazar to some extent.
Although the number of tourists at the beach was relatively low due to the bad weather, many were still seen enjoying the beach despite the rain.
The cloudy sky, rain-soaked beach and rough waves created a different atmosphere in the tourism town.
