Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel seized 50,000 yaba tablets and arrested a man during an anti-narcotics operation in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, early on Friday.

The operation was conducted by a special patrol team of the Palongkhali Border Outpost under BGB’s Ukhiya Battalion (64 BGB), based on intelligence information.

The arrested man was identified as Nabi Hossain, 28, son of Mohammad Kasem, and a resident of Block A, Camp 16, Ukhiya.

According to BGB, the patrol team spotted a man entering Bangladesh from Myanmar at around 5:20am on October 16. He was carrying a bundle wrapped in a gamchha while crossing an embankment south of Saidul Bashar’s fish enclosure in the border area.

When the patrol team challenged him, the man attempted to flee. BGB members chased and apprehended him.

A search of the bundle allegedly found five cartons containing 50,000 blue yaba tablets wrapped in khaki-coloured packaging.

During preliminary questioning, the arrested man reportedly admitted he obtained the yaba from the Myanmar border area and was carrying it to sell at a higher price, according to BGB.

Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Zahirul Islam, commander of Ukhiya Battalion, confirmed the seizure on Friday.

He said intelligence surveillance had been strengthened to identify drug suppliers and other people involved in smuggling and bring them to justice.

The commander said BGB remained committed not only to border security but also to preventing smuggling and drug trafficking, adding that similar operations would continue.

The Ukhiya Battalion operates under the Ramu Sector of the Cox’s Bazar Region. According to BGB, the battalion has long been engaged in maintaining border security and combating drug trafficking and other illegal activities.

The seized tablets and the arrested man were reported by BGB following the operation. The relevant authorities are expected to pursue further legal action.
