Bangladesh’s coastal areas, including Cox’s Bazar, are expected to remain free from the impact of severe cyclonic storm Muras, which crossed the south Andhra coast of India early Tuesday.

The storm is currently located over south Andhra Pradesh and adjoining coastal areas and is likely to move further north-northwestwards while gradually weakening, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.

In view of the situation, the department has asked the Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra maritime ports to lower their warning signals.

A special bulletin issued by the department’s Storm Warning Centre on Tuesday said Muras had completed crossing the south Andhra coast as a severe cyclonic storm in the early hours of the day.

It said there was no possibility of squally winds over the maritime ports, the North Bay, and adjoining coastal areas of Bangladesh.

Abdul Hannan, an assistant meteorologist at the Cox’s Bazar Meteorological Office, confirmed the development.
