Cox’s Bazar-4 (Ukhiya-Teknaf) lawmaker Shahjahan Chowdhury has stressed the need for speedy repatriation of Rohingyas, saying their return to their homeland is the only way to ensure a lasting solution to the crisis.
He made the remarks as the chief guest at a consultation meeting titled ‘Consultation with Rohingya and Host Communities: Views and Expectations’ at Beach View Hotel in Cox’s Bazar at 11:00am on Thursday.
The Policy Research Centre (PRC) organised the meeting.
Shahjahan Chowdhury said President Ziaur Rahman had resolved the Rohingya crisis in the past. He said Tarique Rahman had also made considerable progress behind the scenes on Rohingya repatriation.
“The crisis must be resolved through speedy repatriation,” he added.
Professor Moktar Ahmed, vice-chancellor of Cox’s Bazar International University, attended the event as a special guest.
Journalists, cultural activists, lawyers, Rohingya youths, women entrepreneurs and representatives of different professions took part in the consultation. They shared their views and experiences on the impact of the Rohingya crisis on local communities, their expectations and possible solutions.
The organisers said the host communities in Cox’s Bazar, alongside the Rohingya population, had been dealing with the crisis’s multifaceted impacts for a long time.
They stressed the importance of listening to the views and experiences of all relevant stakeholders and holding participatory discussions to find a sustainable solution.
Through these consultations, they aim to support inclusive dialogue and evidence-based policymaking, the organisers said.
