Bangladesh and China on Thursday discussed ways to deepen bilateral cooperation in political and party-to-party exchanges, trade, investment, connectivity and development, with Dhaka seeking Beijing’s continued support for the early repatriation of Rohingyas to Myanmar.

The issues were discussed during a breakfast meeting hosted by State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir in honour of Liu Haixing, Minister of the International Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, at the State Guest House Padma.

During the meeting, the two sides reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations under the framework of the “China-Bangladesh Community with a Shared Future in the New Era”.

Kobir sought China’s continued diplomatic support for the early, safe and sustainable repatriation of forcibly displaced Rohingyas to their homeland in Myanmar.

The two sides also exchanged views on expanding political engagement, strengthening party-to-party cooperation, boosting bilateral trade and investment, improving connectivity and deepening development partnerships.

Recalling the longstanding friendship between Bangladesh and China, both sides expressed satisfaction with the outcome of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s visit to China in June this year.

Liu highlighted the significant role of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee (IDCPC) in China’s foreign policy and reaffirmed his department’s commitment to working closely with Bangladesh to further consolidate bilateral ties.

He expressed China’s willingness to elevate the relationship to new heights through sustained political dialogue, institutional engagement and mutually beneficial cooperation.

During the discussion, Liu also recalled the contributions of his father, Liu Shuqing, a former Chinese ambassador to Bangladesh, in fostering friendship and strengthening diplomatic ties between the two countries.

The Chinese minister arrived here on November 3 on a three-day visit as part of ongoing efforts to deepen political engagement and strengthen bilateral cooperation.
