In a sweeping administrative move, all 493 Upazila Parishad chairmen across the country have been removed from their posts. The local government division issued separate orders on Monday, appointing Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs) to take charge of upazila administration. This decision follows the recent fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government amid a student-led mass uprising on August 5. In the aftermath, many local government representatives have reportedly gone into hiding, leaving a power vacuum that the government has swiftly addressed by placing UNOs in control.
