The Forest Department in Cox’s Bazar rescued 58 birds, including egrets, starlings, and cormorants, caught in poachers’ traps in Ukhiya. The Forest Department later released the birds back into the wild.
The operation took place on Sunday afternoon near the Palongkhali Rohingya Camp, specifically in the area under the Thainkhali Forest Range.
According to the Forest Department, poachers had set up nets to capture birds. They trapped 48 egrets, six starlings, and four cormorants.
Officials conducted the rescue operation, acting on a tip-off from locals. Despite safely freeing the birds, the poachers escaped and evaded arrest.
The Ukhiya Forest Department’s Range Officer, Gazi Shafiul Alam, confirmed the incident and stated that, despite no arrests during the operation, they gathered information about the poachers and will take legal action against them.
Speaking on the matter, Ukhiya’s Assistant Commissioner (Land), Zarin Tasnim, said that bird hunting is a punishable offense. As winter begins, migratory birds are arriving in flocks.
“We are ensuring their safe habitat and taking measures to prevent their poaching,” she added.
