Fishermen from Dhalghata in Moheshkhali, Cox’s Bazar, caught a massive 25-kilogram golden popa fish on Thursday (December 19). They sold the prized fish for an impressive Tk 1.45 lakh.
Fisherman Nurul Absar, who caught the fish, shared that he had been idle due to adverse weather preventing fishing trips. On Thursday morning, he and eight fellow fishermen ventured to sea, where they netted the giant golden popa fish just off Dhalghata’s coast.
Marine scientists explain that the fish’s high price comes from its large air bladder, which has significant commercial value. Demand for popa fish has soared due to its health benefits, especially for individuals with diabetes and high blood pressure, as it contains zero cholesterol.
Health experts also point out that the fish’s high nutrient content drives its popularity among consumers.
The unexpected catch has sparked excitement among local fishermen, who hope for more lucrative hauls.
