After a long wait, the Chaliatali Market in Maheshkhali has resumed operations, restoring its former identity as Janata Bazar. Previously known for its weekly trading days, this market had been a lifeline for locals until they were forced to travel to Badrakhali Market in the neighboring upazila to purchase essentials. With its revival, Chaliatali Market now provides a wide range of daily necessities at the community’s doorstep.
The market provides fresh vegetables, fish, meat, dried fish, and other essential items. Local farmers and traders can sell their products directly here, benefiting sellers and buyers. One of the market’s standout features is its toll-free operation, sparing traders from paying fees or bribes. This enables them to offer products at more affordable prices.
A local farmer, Amir Hossain, shared his joy: “Earlier, we had to travel to other places to sell our vegetables and fish. We can set up our stalls here, and sales are good. The toll-free policy is a huge relief for us.”
Shoppers at Chaliatali Market are equally delighted. They find products readily available and reasonably priced. Rafiqul Islam, a resident, remarked, “Traveling to Badrakhali took both time and money. Now we have everything we need in our market.”
