In a major operation, police rescued 15 abducted individuals, including 10 Rohingyas, from a hilltop in Teknaf’s Baharchhara area on Friday (January 24) afternoon. The raid also led to the arrest of two suspected kidnappers, while 10-15 others managed to escape, according to law enforcement officials.
Around 1:30 PM, the rescue occurred behind Nurul Islam Member’s residence on a hill in Baharchhara. Among the rescued were five Bangladeshi nationals and ten Rohingyas, including six children.
Cox’s Bazar Superintendent of Police Muhammad Rahmat Ullah confirmed the information through a press release. He explained that the victims were lured by the kidnapping gang with false promises and taken to the remote hill area over the past 16to17 days. The kidnapping gang held them hostage and demanded ransom from their families.
“The gang has been actively involved in abducting Bangladeshi citizens and Rohingya refugees for ransom. We are taking strict action against such criminal activities,” SP Rahmat Ullah stated.
The suspects arrested were Mohammad Harun (25) and Nur Mohammad (19), both residents of Kachchopia Karachi Para.
The police confirmed that they have placed the rescued individuals in protective custody and initiated legal proceedings against the suspects.
