A four-day training workshop on village courts has begun in Cox’s Bazar, aiming to enhance the efficiency and awareness of local justice systems. The District Administration organized the event under the Local Government Division’s Village Court Activation Project, which began yesterday at the BIAM Foundation’s regional center in the city.
Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Salahuddin attended the inauguration as the chief guest. In his remarks, he emphasized the government’s commitment to strengthening grassroots justice through active village courts. “The government has taken multiple initiatives to make village courts more functional and accessible to the rural population,” he said.
On the opening day, participants were introduced to a range of topics, including the concept of village courts, the judicial system, distinctions between village courts and traditional arbitration (salish), the foundational principles of village courts, Supreme Court rulings, and the jurisdiction and authority of village courts.
Rubaiya Afroze, Deputy Director of the Local Government Division, presided over the session. Other speakers included BIAM’s Regional Director, Md. Lutfor Rahman, and Additional Superintendent of Police Alok Biswas.
Administrative officers from all Union Parishads across the district are participating in the workshop, which aims to empower local officials with the knowledge and skills needed to facilitate justice at the grassroots level.
