Home Affairs Adviser retired Lieutenant General (Retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has stated that Bangladesh is maintaining communication with both the Myanmar military junta and the rebel group Arakan Army (AA) due to the latter’s increasing control over Myanmar’s Rakhine State, which borders Bangladesh.

During his visit to the Teknaf border area on Monday (December 30), the advisor told journalists that the government has not yet decided on registering new Rohingya entrants because no policy decision has been made about offering them shelter in Bangladesh.

“The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) fully controls the Bangladesh border, and we have urged locals not to panic,” he said. However, he claimed that some local brokers are aiding Rohingya infiltrations.

On the drug issue, the Home Affairs Advisor remarked, “This area is infamous for drugs. Even Bodi (former MP) is well-known nationwide for his connection to drugs. This is not a new problem; it’s a long-standing issue and a challenge for the entire country. Eliminating drugs requires collective effort, as all forms of crime stem from it. Law enforcement alone cannot address this issue—it needs everyone’s cooperation and involvement.”

The advisor arrived in Teknaf via helicopter from Dhaka around noon.
