Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has distributed food supplies among 100 underprivileged fishermen in Teknaf as a temporary fishing ban in the Bay of Bengal leaves many struggling to earn a living.

Aid was distributed between 4:00 pm and 5:00 pm on Tuesday, October 20, in Teknaf municipality and the Haja Chhara area adjoining Marine Drive, under the jurisdiction of Teknaf Battalion (2 BGB).

The supplies included rice, flour, cooking oil, lentils, sugar and salt.

Fishing of all kinds has been prohibited in Bangladesh’s maritime waters in the Bay of Bengal for 22 days, from October 8 to October 29, to support the breeding and growth of marine fish stocks. The restriction has temporarily affected the livelihoods of fishermen in border areas, prompting the BGB to provide humanitarian assistance.

The commanding officer of Teknaf Battalion (2 BGB) said the force was working to implement the BGB director general’s vision of making the organisation a symbol of security and trust along the border.

Alongside border security and efforts to prevent drug trafficking and smuggling, the BGB was committed to supporting the socioeconomic development of marginalised communities living in border areas, he said.

He expressed hope that similar humanitarian and public welfare initiatives would continue.
