Border Guard Bangladesh personnel recovered 50,000 yaba tablets abandoned by smugglers during a special operation in Ukhia, Cox’s Bazar, early Monday.
Lt Col Mohammad Zahirul Islam, commander of Ukhia Battalion (64 BGB), confirmed the seizure.
Acting on intelligence, a patrol team from the Whykong Border Outpost spotted a man entering Bangladesh from Myanmar near the Konapara embankment at around 12:10am.
When the patrol team challenged him, the man dropped a polythene bag near a gewa tree and fled towards a nearby village.
The BGB team later searched the area and recovered the bag, which contained five packets wrapped in khaki-coloured material—the packets contained around 50,000 blue-coloured yaba tablets in airtight packaging.
A further search of the area found no other illegal goods.
The battalion commander said intelligence surveillance had been strengthened to identify and arrest those involved in supplying and smuggling the drugs.
He said operations against drug trafficking and smuggling would continue.
