The newly established Ukhiya Battalion (64 BGB) of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has officially commenced its journey with a grand flag-raising ceremony.

The flags of Dhaka Station Headquarters & Guard Police Battalion and Gazipur’s Dog Squad K-9 Unit & Training Center were also raised.

The inauguration took place on Saturday (March 1) at the training ground of Cox’s Bazar Battalion (34 BGB), where Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury hoisted the flag to mark the formal launch of the Ukhiya Battalion. BGB Director General Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui was also present at the event.

Following the flag hoisting, the newly formed Ukhiya Battalion, Guard Police Battalion, and BGB’s Dog Squad K-9 Unit performed a well-coordinated parade. The ceremony concluded with a special prayer seeking prosperity and success for the newly established units.

Speaking to journalists, Home Affairs Advisor Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury highlighted the growing sensitivity of the Bangladesh-Myanmar border due to ongoing conflicts inside Myanmar.

“Considering the recent situation, the establishment of a new battalion on this border was a necessity. The Ukhiya Battalion will play a crucial role in strengthening border security, preventing illegal infiltration, curbing drug smuggling—including yaba and crystal meth—combating terrorism, and ensuring the safety of the local population,” he stated.

The flag-hoisting ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials, regional commanders from BGB Headquarters and Cox’s Bazar, the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of Cox’s Bazar, dignitaries, government officials, and journalists.
