The Bangladesh Oceanographic Research Institute (BORI) organised a beach-cleaning programme in 2026 at its nearby BORI Beach, with students, teachers, researchers, and officials taking part in activities aimed at reducing marine pollution and raising environmental awareness.
The programme was attended by BORI Director General Commodore Sheikh Shaheed Ahmed, Ministry of Science and Technology Additional Secretary (administration) Ashraf Ali Faruk, joint secretary Salma Akter Khuki, and scientists, officers and employees of the institute.
Students, teachers, and guardians of BORI School and College also participated in the beach-cleaning drive and various activities, including cubbing, balloon flying, and biscuit races.
During the joint initiative, participants collected plastic bottles, polythene bags, food packaging, plastic cups and spoons, discarded fishing nets, nylon ropes, glass, metal waste and other marine litter from the beach.
The institute said the initiative would improve the beach’s cleanliness and natural beauty, reduce pollution from plastic and other solid waste, and support the conservation of marine biodiversity.
Removing discarded fishing nets, nylon ropes, and plastic waste would also reduce the risk of marine animals becoming entangled in nets, ingesting waste, and losing or suffering damage to their habitats, it said.
The programme also aimed to give students practical knowledge of environmental conservation, sustainable use of marine resources, and proper waste management.
It also sought to promote collective participation, social responsibility, and volunteerism among students, teachers, researchers, and local communities in protecting the environment.
BORI said such initiatives could help maintain coastal environmental balance, ensure a sustainable marine environment, and encourage environmentally responsible behaviour among future generations.
The beach cleaning and cubbing activities also formed an important part of the educational activities for students of BORI School and College.
