Fishing trawlers returning from the rough Bay of Bengal during the monsoon are landing a wide variety of marine fish at the Cox’s Bazar Fish Landing Centre, Fishery Ghat, with the striking red coral fish emerging as a major attraction for buyers.
A visit to the landing centre found workers unloading red coral fish from several trawlers alongside other marine catches. Fish traders said the species is caught only occasionally in fishermen’s nets, making it one of the more sought-after fish in the market because of its distinctive bright red colour and relative rarity.
According to traders, red coral fish are currently selling for between Tk 900 and Tk 1,300 per kilogram, with prices varying by size and quality.
Fisherman Salam Ullah said that while fishing in deep waters, trawlers often haul in a range of marine species.
‘Red coral fish are comparatively rare, so they usually attract strong demand from buyers when they arrive at the landing centre,’ he said.
Trading at the fish landing centre has remained brisk, with wholesale buyers and local customers purchasing a variety of marine fish, including pomfret, Bombay duck, shrimp, coral fish, king mackerel and tuna.
The bustling market has regained its usual early-morning vibrancy as fresh catches continue to arrive.
