Trading in dried red chillies has gathered pace at Cox’s Bazar’s Boro Bazar, where wholesalers and retailers are offering a wide range of locally produced and imported varieties to meet growing demand.
A visit to the market found dried chillies sourced from Hathazari, Bogura, Panchagarh, Cumilla, Chandpur and Raipur, alongside imported Indian varieties. Prices vary depending on the variety, pungency, size and quality.
Traders said wholesalers are purchasing chillies in bulk and supplying them to markets across different upazilas of the district and neighbouring areas. Retail customers, meanwhile, are buying quantities ranging from half a kilogram to several kilograms for household use.
Vendor Jasim said locally produced premium thin dried chillies are selling at Tk 480-520 per kg, while Bogura chillies are priced at Tk 420-460 per kg and Hathazari varieties at Tk 380-430 per kg. Thick local varieties are selling for Tk 300-360 per kg, while imported Indian dried chillies are available at Tk 220-300 per kg.
Another retailer said hotel and restaurant owners, spice traders and household consumers regularly purchase dried chillies from the market, with premium-quality products consistently attracting strong demand.
According to traders, Boro Bazar handles a significant volume of dried chilli trade every day and plays an important role in meeting the demand of Cox’s Bazar’s hotels, restaurants and local markets.
