The Bangladesh Coast Guard has strengthened patrols and surveillance to ensure the safety of tourists travelling to Saint Martin’s Island.
High-speed boats are being used for regular patrols to ensure the safe movement of tourist vessels between Cox’s Bazar and the island.
Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon, media officer of the Bangladesh Coast Guard, said the force has intensified patrols and surveillance from Nuniachhara BIWTA jetty in Cox’s Bazar to Saint Martin’s to ensure the safe movement of tourist vessels.
He said the Coast Guard performs law enforcement duties in coastal and riverine areas while also working to ensure the overall security of Saint Martin’s, the country’s only coral island, combat crime and protect its natural environment and biodiversity.
As part of the intensified operation, high-speed boats are conducting regular patrols and intelligence surveillance along the route. Coast Guard ships and boats have also been kept ready round the clock to respond quickly to any untoward incident or accident.
Coast Guard personnel are also prepared to provide emergency assistance to tourists and passengers whenever necessary, he said.
Sujon said such activities would continue to protect the island’s tourism environment, ensure safe sea travel and safeguard the lives and property of local residents and tourists.
He urged people to seek assistance when necessary by calling the Coast Guard emergency service at 16111.
