In the heart of Cox’s Bazar’s bustling tourist area, Kolatoli is a troubling sight that mars the beauty of key institutions. The entrance to Kolatoli Government Primary School, Sufibagh Jame Mosque, the Upazila Resource Center (a teacher training facility), and a nearby shrine have become dumping grounds for heaps of discarded coconut shells. The piles, mixed with plastic waste and other garbage, have tainted these critical sites’ environment and aesthetic appeal.
A Growing Problem
Upon visiting the area, it was evident that an empty plot of land adjacent to the Kolatoli Marine Drive Road had become a dumping ground. Here, people discard coconut shells and other waste materials they have brought from various locations. The garbage has remained unaddressed for months, emitting a foul odor and causing significant environmental and public health concerns.
Local Voices
Speaking to Cox’s Bazar Life, Kolatoli Government Primary School’s Head Teacher, Hasna Hena, shared her frustration.
“This trash has been here for a long time, and it’s not only ruining the school’s environment but also creating various problems for the children. The wind carries the stench from the garbage, making it difficult for students to concentrate. Despite informing the municipality verbally, no effective measures have been taken,” she said.
Assistant Imam of Sufibagh Jame Mosque, Mamunur Rashid, expressed similar concerns: “The smell from the waste enters the mosque during prayers, making it uncomfortable for worshippers.”
Municipality’s Response
Kolkata’s Municipal Conservancy Inspector, Kabir Hossain, attributed the issue to local businesses, particularly coconut sellers operating along the beach. “Traders and vendors frequently dump their waste here, creating a massive pile. Clearing this mess will require substantial manpower and equipment. We are currently exploring ways to resolve this issue and will ensure the area is cleaned and measures are taken to prevent further dumping soon,” he said.
A Call for Action
Residents and visitors have called for designated waste disposal zones and stricter monitoring to prevent such pollution. Cox’s Bazar’s natural beauty, combined with its reputation as a leading tourist destination, demands immediate action to address these issues and restore the charm of Kolatoli’s vital institutions.
