The government has officially upgraded Cox’s Bazar Domestic Airport to an international airport, with plans to begin international flight operations from October 2. However, multiple key infrastructure projects at the terminal remain unfinished, casting uncertainty over the scheduled launch.

Construction Still Underway, Completion May Take Time

Sources report that work on passenger arrival and departure lounges, departure conveyor belts, and immigration counters is still ongoing. While the runway is fully operational, these essential facilities may require an additional two months to be completed, according to officials.

Meanwhile, the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) has set a target to finish all work by September 28. Several airlines, including Biman Bangladesh Airlines and US-Bangla Airlines, as well as a few foreign carriers, have been asked to submit their flight plans in anticipation of the launch.

Airlines Await Clear Timelines Amid Uncertainty

Air Commodore Abu Saeed Mahbub Khan, CAAB Member (Operations & Planning), stated, “We are working to ensure the airport is ready within the scheduled timeframe. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has been formally notified. Now, we are waiting for responses from the airlines.”

However, no airline has yet finalized its flight slots, creating doubts about whether international operations can start as planned.

A Gateway to New Opportunities

Officials say that launching international flights from Cox’s Bazar could significantly boost foreign tourist arrivals, benefiting hotels, resorts, transportation services, international conferences, corporate events, and the local economy as a whole.

Between 2009 and 2013, the airport underwent development, and in 2015, the government initiated plans to upgrade it to international standards. Leveraging Cox’s Bazar’s strategic location, the government aims not only to enhance tourism but also to establish the airport as a regional aviation hub and a refueling point.
