Cox’s Bazar recorded 119 millimetres of rainfall in the 24 hours until 6:00 am on Thursday, with the Bangladesh Meteorological Department forecasting intermittent rain to continue throughout the day, at least until the evening, under the influence of an active monsoon.
Abdul Hannan, assistant meteorologist at the Cox’s Bazar Meteorological Office, said there was currently no warning signal in force for the sea, although persistent rainfall was continuing across Cox’s Bazar and other coastal areas due to active monsoon conditions.
“Light to moderate rain is likely to continue until this evening. Thereafter, rainfall is expected to gradually decrease, with the rain-bearing system likely shifting towards the northern parts of the country,” he said.
In a heavy rainfall warning, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department said that, from 9:00 am on Thursday and over the following 24 hours, parts of the Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions could experience heavy rainfall of 44- 88 mm, while isolated areas might receive very heavy rainfall exceeding 89mm.
The Met Office also warned that very heavy rainfall could trigger landslides in hilly areas of the Chattogram Division and advised people living on vulnerable hill slopes to remain alert.
