The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has asked Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra seaports to hoist distant cautionary signal No. 1 as a well-marked low-pressure area over the east-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas moves west-northwest.
The information was disclosed in a special weather bulletin issued by the department’s Storm Warning Centre.
The bulletin said the system was currently positioned over the east-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas after moving west-northwest. It may move further in the same direction and intensify, it added.
Winds near the center of the system were reaching a sustained maximum speed of 40 kilometers per hour, with gusts or squalls potentially reaching 50 kilometers per hour. The sea could remain rough near the center of the low-pressure area, the bulletin said.
Fishing boats and trawlers operating in the North Bay of Bengal have been advised to remain out of the deep sea until further notice.
Abdul Hannan, assistant meteorologist at the Cox’s Bazar Meteorological Office, confirmed the information.
