Every morning at dawn, the Daria Nagar coastline in Cox’s Bazar comes alive with the tireless routine of fisherman Rahmat. He earns his living by dragging his nets along the shoreline, hoping for a good catch. Rahmat, a longtime resident of the area, says that even with new nets, the sea no longer yields fish as it once did.
“Once, I owned a fishing trawler,” Rahmat recalls. “I could venture far into the deep sea and catch big fish. But that trawler is gone now. These days, I fish close to the shore with a small net and try to catch whatever I can.”
The meagre catch trapped in his net is what sustains his family. With changing sea conditions, unpredictable weather, and a decline in fish populations, Rahmat—like many local fishermen—struggles under the growing weight of daily hardship.
