As the seasonal fishing ban draws near, fishermen on the Cox’s Bazar coast rush to maximize their remaining days at sea. In preparation, large fishing boats and trawlers are being readied, with fishermen stocking up on fuel, ice, and other essential supplies before setting off into deep waters.

Scenes of frantic activity can be witnessed at various points along the Cox’s Bazar coastline, where some fishermen have already embarked on their last trips before the ban takes effect.

Speaking to local fishermen, it was learned that the ban, which typically lasts 65 days, has been slightly shortened this year. Seasonal restriction is imposed to allow marine fish populations to regenerate, which plays a crucial role in conserving oceanic fish stocks. However, while it benefits the marine ecosystem, many fishermen express concern over the impact on their livelihoods.

According to the Marine Fisheries Act, a temporary fishing ban is enforced annually to boost fish production and protect the ocean’s ecosystem. However, locals have urged the government to increase financial assistance for affected fishermen during this period.
