Loaded with bunches of freshly harvested bananas, a battery-powered three-wheeler travels along the scenic Marine Drive in Cox’s Bazar, carrying produce from the hills to local markets.
The sight of the vehicle against the backdrop of lush greenery has become a familiar yet eye-catching feature for both residents and travellers.
Banana trader Amidul Rahman said he collects the fruit directly from Chakma farmers living in the hilly areas near Patuartek before transporting it to wholesale and retail markets across the district.
‘The bananas grown in the hills are fresh and naturally cultivated, making them highly popular with customers,’ he said.
He added that the fruit is known for its freshness and quality, allowing it to sell quickly at favourable prices.
Purchasing directly from Indigenous farmers also enables traders to source the produce at competitive rates, making the business commercially viable.
Residents said the marketing of agricultural products from the hill communities not only provides farmers with a stable source of income but also ensures that consumers have access to fresh, high-quality fruit.
They added that scenes such as banana-laden vehicles traveling along Marine Drive reflect the growing links between Cox’s Bazar’s hill communities and local markets, highlighting the economic contributions of small-scale agricultural producers.
