Cox’s Bazar is witnessing a surge in activity at goat markets ahead of Mansa Puja, one of the major religious festivals for the Hindu community, set to be observed next Sunday. Traditionally, devotees offer goats, sheep, and ducks as sacrifices to appease Goddess Mansa, with goat sacrifices in particular being a long-standing custom in the region.

In preparation for the festival, makeshift goat markets have sprung up throughout the district, bustling with buyers and sellers. Prices range widely—from around Tk 10,000 for more miniature goats to over Tk 200,000 for the largest and most prized ones.

A visit to the city’s Gol Dighi goat market revealed a lively scene filled with eager customers. Vendors said demand is notably higher this year, and they expect good returns. Medium-sized goats, in particular, seem to be drawing extra attention from buyers.

Mohammad Delwar, who brought a Haryana breed goat from Mithachhari in Ramu, said, “I’ve priced my goat at Tk 120,000, but if we can strike a deal, I’m willing to negotiate.”

Many families are visiting the markets together, carefully selecting goats for the occasion. The excitement in the air, with smiles on the faces of both buyers and sellers, has turned the lead-up to the puja into a festive social gathering.
