The government has allocated Tk 30 million and 450 tonnes of rice for flood-affected people in Cox’s Bazar, while relief and emergency assistance have already reached between 200,000 and 250,000 people, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad A Mannan said on Saturday.
Speaking during visits to the flood-hit upazilas of Pekua and Chakaria, the deputy commissioner said the prime minister had personally inquired about the flood situation in Cox’s Bazar and provided necessary instructions.
“The prime minister herself sought updates on the situation yesterday and issued the necessary directives. We have already delivered government assistance to between 200,000 and 250,000 people. Cox’s Bazar has been allocated Tk 30 million and 450 tonnes of rice,” he said.
The deputy commissioner said the weather had improved significantly compared with the previous day, while the water level of the Matamuhuri River had fallen considerably.
“According to the Bangladesh Water Development Board, the river is now flowing well below the danger level. We hope the flood situation will improve further by tomorrow as the floodwater gradually recedes,” he added.
Earlier in the day, Mannan visited Banglapara village in Pekua Sadar Union, where he distributed relief materials, medicines, candles and safe drinking water among marooned residents. The Pekua upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) and assistant commissioner (land) accompanied him during the visit.
He later visited the Betua Bazar Station area in Purba Barabheola and the Moronguna area in Konakhali Union under Chakaria upazila, where relief goods, emergency medicines, candles, and safe drinking water were distributed among affected families.
The Chakaria UNO and assistant commissioner (land) were also present.
The district administration said it was closely monitoring the flood situation and would continue to provide relief and humanitarian assistance to affected people.
