In a heartfelt tribute to the salt and betel farmers of Moheshkhali, the island is set to host its first-ever international-standard half marathon on September 12, 2025, under the banner; “Miles for Moheshkhali, Stand for Salt & Betel Farmer.”
Organized by local sports initiative Cox’s Bazar Triathletes, the event aims to raise awareness for the rights and fair prices of salt and betel cultivators, while also spotlighting the untapped tourism potential of Bangladesh’s only island upazila.
The marathon will kick off at 6:00 AM from Shaplapur High School, run through the scenic route to Chhoto Moheshkhali, and finish back at the starting point. There will be two competitive categories, a 10 km Run and a 21 km Half Marathon.
Organizers expect around 500 runners, including participants from both within the region and abroad, making it a major athletic and social event.
Speaking about the initiative, event coordinator NH Suja said, “This half marathon is not just a race—it’s a movement.” It’s about amplifying the voices of salt and betel farmers, advocating for their rights, and putting Moheshkhali on the global map as a destination of cultural, agricultural, and natural significance.”
The organizers are seeking public support and non-partisan sponsorships to ensure the success of this groundbreaking event.
