Dhalghata-Matarbari, located on Maheshkhali Island in Cox’s Bazar, is a lovely sub-island with breathtaking scenery. At its southernmost tip lies a vast, naturally formed island called Hasher Char, which locals often compare to Indonesia’s Bali Island due to its charm.
Hasher Char, located south of Dhalghata Union, is a large sandbank surrounded by the Bay of Bengal. It has lush casuarina trees, mangrove forests, and diverse fauna, with red crabs being one of the most prominent species. The island was named “Hasher Char” after the migrating birds and wild ducks once inhabited the area.
Rahat Kabir, a climate activist from Maheshkhali, said that environmentalists advocate for preserving Hasher Char by promoting eco-friendly tourism rather than harmful development projects.
They believe that developing the area as a tourist destination could both protect its delicate ecosystem and generate significant revenue for the government from tourism each year.
