Today, a human chain was organized before the Ghotibhanga Beat Office, demanding the protection of the last remaining mangrove belt in Maheshkhali Island, which acts as a natural barrier against disasters. The demonstration was led by the Moheshkhali chapter of Dharitri Rokkay Amra (Dhara), a local environmental group.

The protest, which began at 2 PM, included local residents as well as representatives from the Moheshkhali Protection Committee, Coastal Protection Foundation, and the sustainability-focused organization YPSA.

Speakers at the event emphasized the critical role of mangroves in preserving the island’s ecosystem and protecting residents from storms and tidal surges. However, rampant deforestation and illegal encroachment rapidly destroy this green shield, posing a severe threat to Moheshkhali’s environment.

The protestors demanded an immediate halt to mangrove deforestation, stricter enforcement of conservation laws, and increased public awareness through engagement with local communities.

Organizers hoped that this united stance by islanders and environmental groups would strengthen efforts to safeguard nature and Moheshkhali’s fragile ecosystem.
