Maize is a delicious staple, packed with nutritional value. Although maize farming is not widely practiced in Cox’s Bazar, farmers in Teknaf have found financial success by cultivating hybrid varieties. Fields are now filled with lush green maize plants, swaying in the winter breeze. Thanks to fertile soil and favorable weather conditions, this season has yielded an excellent harvest.
With the rising demand for maize in animal feed production, farmers are increasingly turning to maize cultivation. Compared to other crops, maize requires less investment and labor but offers higher profitability.
Local farmers claim that fresh green maize, which fetches a higher price than dried maize, accounts for most of their produce sales. This growing demand has encouraged more farmers to embrace maize farming.
Mohammad Zakirul Islam, the Agricultural Officer of Teknaf Upazila, reports that farmers have cultivated hybrid maize on 20 hectares of land this season. The Upazila Agriculture Department is actively providing farmers with guidance on improving yield, maintenance, and market strategies.
