Sonarpara Bazar, Ukhia, Cox’s Bazar—Mizanur Rahman (32) sits by the roadside with freshly harvested betel nuts, just brought from his garden, waiting for a vehicle to transport them. He plans to sell the nuts at wholesale prices in the market. From here, these betel nuts make their way to Dhaka, Rajshahi, Rangpur, and across Bangladesh. Wholesale prices range from 300 to 400 taka for 20 gandas (80 pieces).
In the Cox’s Bazar region, most people chew betel nut to some extent, so the demand remains strong. Sonarpara market doesn’t have fixed market days; various markets operate on different days throughout the week.
