The fire caused by gas escaping from underground during the drilling of a deep tube-well in Inani, Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, may continue for at least another 15 days, as experts have advised allowing the gas to escape naturally while keeping the fire under control.
If the gas flow does not decrease within that period, authorities will take alternative measures, including extinguishing the fire and stopping the gas flow with the help of an expert team.
The Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Corporation (Petrobangla) disclosed the plan in a press release issued on Sunday (November 1).
According to the release, gas started escaping from underground and caught fire on October 27 when a deep tube-well was being drilled near the Chhota Inani Bridge in Jaliapalong union of Ukhiya. The incident occurred after drilling reached a depth of around 1,000 feet.
Two geologists from the Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company (Bapex) were sent to the site immediately after the incident. They have remained in Cox’s Bazar to monitor the overall situation.
Following expert advice, authorities are allowing the gas to escape safely while taking measures to prevent the fire from spreading. Experts believe the gas flow may gradually decline within approximately 15 days.
However, if the flow does not decrease within the stipulated period, an expert team will take alternative measures to extinguish the fire and stop the gas emission, the release said.
As a precaution, public access within 100 metres of the site has been prohibited. The local administration has taken necessary measures to maintain law and order, while Petrobangla, Bapex and the local administration are jointly monitoring the situation round the clock.
Meanwhile, geological surveys and two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) seismic surveys, along with other necessary activities, are being undertaken to assess the potential gas reserves in the area.
Petrobangla has urged the public not to panic, but to remain cautious, follow safety restrictions around the site and cooperate with the authorities concerned.
