The northern Sonarpara beach area in Ukhiya’s Jalia Palong Union has recently become a popular spot for tourists to relax in rented hammocks. In the coastal forests, rows of hammocks hang between the jhau trees. Mamun, the owner of a hammock business, informed Cox’s Bazar Life that he charges tourists Tk30 for 30 minutes and Tk50 per hour for these hammocks. Mamun owns 20 hammocks and earns between Tk600 and Tk1,000 daily. A first-year honors student at Ukhiya Degree College, Mamun has been involved in the hammock rental business since 2020.
