Once known for its flourishing pottery industry, Kumor Para of Maheshkhali, also called Kulal Para, has seen its cherished craft disappear entirely by 2022.

Ten years ago, the potters in the village were working nonstop to satisfy the increasing demand for earthenware, which included anything from children’s toys and cosmetics to everyday essentials.

These products were sold across Chakaria, Alikadam, Rangamati, and other places.

Local potter Mohammad Zafar recalls when his family’s pottery business was in full swing.

Like many other potters in the neighborhood, Zafar makes his living by making crab cages.

He said that the decline is due to the rise of plastic products, which have replaced clay items in daily use.

The village’s spinning wheels, or ‘chak,’ sit idle, and locals hope to see this age-old tradition revived, preserving a key part of their cultural heritage.
