The Bangladesh Navy has detained 20 individuals, including a human trafficker and 17 Rohingyas, while they were preparing for an illegal journey to Malaysia from Teknaf.
According to a Navy press release, the arrests were made during a late-night operation on Monday in the Baharchhara area of Teknaf, based on intelligence reports. The operation unfolded as the group, alerted to the presence of Navy personnel, attempted to flee into the hills but were intercepted.
The detainees include 17 Rohingyas, two Bangladeshi nationals, and the trafficker, who also identifies as Rohingya. The Teknaf Police Station has received the apprehended individuals for further legal proceedings.
The press release emphasized that the Bangladesh Navy, acting under the government’s directives, continues regular patrol operations under the “In Aid to Civil Power” mandate to curb illegal activities, including human trafficking, arms smuggling, drug trade, and terrorism while maintaining law and order.
This operation highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat human trafficking and ensure security in coastal regions.
