Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam announced a plan to upgrade the Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar highway to four lanes.
Replying to a question in parliament on Thursday (April 16), the minister said a 26.21-kilometer, four-lane widening project has been approved under Phase 1 of the highway improvement program through a public-private partnership (PPP) model, with completion targeted by 2029.
He said the project includes a 2.6-kilometer flyover. A feasibility study is currently underway for the remaining 48-kilometer section, and discussions with JICA are ongoing regarding financing. He expressed optimism that they would soon decide to upgrade the remaining stretch to four lanes.
The minister acknowledged that the highway is accident-prone but stated that measures have already been taken in high-risk areas to reduce accidents, including improved signage, better road surface conditions, and increased patrols by traffic authorities.
