Extensive preparations are underway in Pekua of Cox’s Bazar ahead of the scheduled visit of Prime Minister and BNP chairperson Tarique Rahman on June 13.
During the visit, he is expected to pay respects at the grave of Wasim Akram, recognised as the first martyr from Chattogram during the July movement, meet members of his family, and inaugurate a plaque marking the recently declared Pekua Municipality.
Various preparations to mark the prime minister’s visit have engaged political leaders, local residents, and officials. Renovation and cleaning work are being carried out at the grave of Wasim Akram, while road repair works in the area have also been accelerated.
Wasim Akram’s mother, Josna Akter, expressed gratitude over the planned visit.
“My son is no longer with us, but his name has become part of history. It is a matter of immense pride that a prime minister will visit someone as ordinary as me,” she said.
She also appealed to the prime minister to ensure justice for the killing of her son.
Pekua Upazila BNP general secretary Iqbal Hossain said the party was making extensive preparations to welcome the prime minister.
“We are taking the highest level of preparations to receive him. We believe his visit will reflect the hopes and aspirations of the people of Pekua,” he said.
Political analyst Farhad Hossain Chowdhury described the visit as a significant occasion for the area.
“The arrival of a prime minister in a place like Pekua is a matter of immense joy. When Pekua Upazila was established, former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia inaugurated its plaque. Now her son, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, is expected to unveil the plaque for Pekua Municipality. This is not only important for the people of Pekua but also for the people of Cox’s Bazar as a whole,” he said.
Excitement and enthusiasm have grown among party activists and local residents ahead of the visit. Many people are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the prime minister during his scheduled engagements in the upazila.
According to organisers, Tarique Rahman is expected to visit the grave of Wasim Akram, meet his family members, and formally unveil the plaque of the Pekua Municipality during the tour.
