On Victory Day, President Md. Shahabuddin and Interim Government Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus paid their respects to the valiant martyrs of the Liberation War at the National Memorial in Savar.
The President arrived at the National Memorial at 6:30 AM on Monday, December 16, and placed a wreath at the central altar. At 7:10 AM, the Chief Advisor followed, accompanied by José Ramos-Horta, President of East Timor, to honor the memory of the fallen heroes.
After laying wreaths, both leaders observed a moment of silence, paying profound tribute to the martyrs of 1971. A smartly turned-out contingent of the Bangladesh Army, Navy, and Air Force presented a state salute while a melancholic bugle tune echoed across the solemn grounds.
The President and the Chief Advisor also signed the visitors’ book at the memorial. The three armed forces chiefs, the Divisional Commissioner of Dhaka, and the Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka were present during the tribute ceremony.
